I'm calling this page Snippets, though its real name is "Snips and Snails and Puppy-Dog Tails, but spelled Tales" — (my son's creative mind at work, not mine). All those words wouldn't fit on the fortune cookie header though, so Snippets it is.

I envision this page will be "bloggy" in nature, but I've never blogged before, so it might not look like a blog to you. I plan to share bits of news, updates, and thoughts on anything and everything… the angst of sending a son off to college; the excitement of having a book published… But what do they say about the best laid plans? Perhaps instead I'll be posting favorite fortune-cookie fortunes, the newest addition to my push-puppet collection, photos of my dog... stay tuned…

Have you ever been called magnificent? I never have until today…twice…in two different thank you notes:

Dear Mrs. Barden,

Thank you for coming to our classroom!! Thank you so, so, so, so, so, soooooooooooooooo much!!!!! I loved it when you came. It was magnificent! Sincerely, Erin.

Dear Mrs. Barden,

I magnificently love you coming to our classroom. I hope you come to our classroom so, so, so much again. Best wishes, Yousif. PS you are a great Author.

Hmm, upon closer reading I realize they didn’t call me magnificent; they called my visit to their classroom magnificent. I guess I’m still waiting for that elusive compliment.

Thoreau Elementary School Visit

November 16, 2011

I had such a wonderful afternoon yesterday! I spent it with Mrs. Amundsen’s third grade class at Thoreau Elementary School in Kirkland. They were quite a darling and personable group and came up with some terrific questions like: “Do you have two big stepsisters in your family?” (No, only a younger brother who isn’t wicked at all, alas ~ if he was, I’d have that many more story ideas!) And, “Are you related to any of the characters in your book?” (Yes, sort of. My nieces inspired the story and I use their names – Emma, Hannah and Abby. Cinderella’s real name is Josephine-Katherine and she’s named after my son, {Joseph} and his friend, Katie.) School visits are the BEST!

Miss Purvis

November 12, 2011

When Aunt Flora appears she brings along her cat, Miss Purvis, who was inspired by a little ceramic cat of my son’s. I sent Diane Goode a picture of Miss Purvis and Diane captured that cat to a T. Fifteen years ago, (prior to her appearance in a book), Miss Purvis met and married a little wooden St. Bernard dog named Murray. They were a dynamic, crime-fighting pair if memory serves… Perhaps the two will have to appear together in a future story – of course, Diane will have to illustrate that too!

...seems like yesterday...

November 3, 2011

I saw the layout for the second Cinderella Smith book ~ The More the Merrier ~ today! Seeing my words intermingled with Diane Goode’s illustrations was magical ~ her work really does bring the whole story to life. In this book, Cinderella’s Aunt Flora is taking care of her while her parents are on vacation. Aunt Flora, loosely based on my mom, drives an Opel GT, (like my mom did). The drawings of the car are spot-on and brought back so many memories from my childhood. Bouncing along in the silly backseat with my brother…seems like yesterday…do I really have a kid in college?

The More the Merrier cover -- woo-hoo!

The next book in the Cinderella Smith series comes out

in April 2012.

I just saw the cover, am over the moon and wanted to share.

Diane Goode, the illustrator, is so, so, so good ~ pun intended ~

but so, so, so true!
